The Nitty Gritty
I love taking pictures of old, beat-up shit—what I affectionately refer to as the nitty gritty of life. There is a more artful description for this type of photography: The Wabi-Sabi Aesthetic. It celebrates humble objects, detritus that most people would never look at twice, and if they did, would call it crap.
Me? I stop, focus and take a photo. The history in the cracks and flaws of these subjects reveal a perseverance to rival any hero narrative. Despite long odds, they have survived, and that speaks to something fundamental about our own existence.
